1st Call Air Source Heat Pump

Air source heat pumps are a smart, long-term home heating solution that provide efficient, low-carbon warmth using energy from the outside air. Installed outside your property, they extract renewable heat and use it to warm your home and hot water, reducing your reliance on traditional fossil-fuel heating systems.

What they offer homeowners is simple and practical:

  • Lower heating bills by delivering more heat energy than the electricity they use.

  • Stable, predictable heating costs by reducing exposure to gas price volatility.

  • Year-round comfort, providing space heating and hot water from a single system.

  • Long-term reliability, with systems designed to operate efficiently for 20–25 years.

  • Increased property appeal as demand grows for low-carbon, future-ready homes.

  • Reduced carbon emissions without changing how you heat your home day to day.

Air source heat pumps work quietly in the background, delivering consistent heat even in cold weather. Because they use renewable energy from the air, they’re one of the most efficient ways to heat a home and can be paired with underfloor heating or modern radiators for optimal performance.

As a home improvement, air source heat pumps aren’t cosmetic. They’re practical, measurable, and future-proof. Once installed, they provide efficient, low-carbon heating while adding long-term value, resilience, and sustainability to your home.

Step 1: Heat is collected from the outside air
An air source heat pump sits outside your home and draws in air, even when it’s cold. The air doesn’t heat your home directly. It simply provides a source of renewable heat energy.

Step 2: The heat is absorbed and compressed
The heat pump transfers this energy into a refrigerant fluid, which boils at very low temperatures. The fluid is then compressed, increasing its temperature significantly.

Step 3: Heat is transferred into your home
The generated heat is passed through a heat exchanger into your home’s heating system. This supplies warmth to radiators or underfloor heating and heats water stored in a hot water cylinder
.

Step 4: Heat is distributed evenly
The system delivers steady, low-temperature heat throughout your home, maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature rather than cycling on and off like a traditional boiler.

Step 5: The process repeats continuously
After releasing its heat, the refrigerant cools, returns to its original state, and the cycle repeats. The system runs automatically whenever heating or hot water is needed.

The UK government offers financial support to help homeowners upgrade to low-carbon heating systems, including air source heat pumps.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
Available in England and Wales, this scheme provides:

  • £7,500 grant towards the cost and installation of an air source heat pump

  • The grant is applied directly by the installer, reducing the upfront cost

  • Funding is available until at least April 2028, subject to government policy

Eligibility Criteria
You may be eligible if:

  • You own your property (homeowners and some landlords qualify)

  • You are replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system such as gas, oil, or LPG

  • Your home has a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

  • The installation is carried out by an MCS-certified installer
