1st Call Solar Batteries

Solar battery storage is a smart upgrade that lets you store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it when you need it most. Instead of exporting unused power back to the grid, a battery allows your home to hold onto that energy for evenings, peak-rate periods, or power outages.

What solar batteries offer homeowners is simple and practical:

• Lower energy bills by using stored solar power instead of buying electricity at higher evening rates.

• Better use of your solar system, maximising self-consumption of the energy you generate.

• Protection from rising electricity prices, with less reliance on the grid.

• Backup power during outages, keeping essential appliances running when the grid goes down.

• Long-term reliability, with modern batteries designed for years of daily use.

• Increased property appeal, as energy storage becomes a key feature for future buyers.

Solar batteries work automatically in the background, charging when surplus solar is available and discharging when your home needs power. You don’t have to change how you use electricity. The system simply prioritises stored energy before drawing from the grid.

As a home improvement, solar battery storage isn’t about appearances. It’s about control, resilience, and efficiency. Installed alongside solar PV or added later, a battery immediately increases the value of your system by reducing energy costs and future-proofing your home against an uncertain energy market.

How do Solar Batteries actually work?

Step 1: Solar panels generate electricity
Your solar PV panels produce electricity whenever there’s daylight. Not just summer postcard sunshine. Normal, grey, everyday daylight still counts.
This electricity is generated as direct current (DC).

Step 2: Your home uses what it needs first
That solar electricity is sent into your home and used by anything running at the time. Lights, appliances, chargers, background stuff you forget is even on. Using solar as it’s generated keeps costs down immediately.

Step 3: Excess energy charges the battery
If your panels are producing more electricity than your home needs, the surplus doesn’t rush off to the grid anymore.
Instead, it’s diverted into your solar battery and stored for later use. Quietly. Automatically. No buttons to press.

Step 4: The battery releases energy when you need it
As solar production drops, usually in the evening or overnight, your battery steps in. Stored energy is released to power your home, reducing how much electricity you need to buy from the grid during expensive peak hours. Solar during the day. Battery at night. Grid as a last resort.

Step 5: The battery can charge from the grid
when electricity is cheaper, on tariffs with off-peak or overnight rates, your battery can also charge from the grid when demand is low and electricity is cheaper. That stored low-cost energy can then be used later when prices rise. This is called load shifting, which sounds complicated but really just means paying less on purpose.

Step 6: The grid fills the gaps if needed
If your battery runs low and solar isn’t producing, the grid supplies the rest. No interruptions. No lifestyle changes. Everything just keeps working. The difference is you’re relying on it far less.
